KNIGHTS CRUISE TO 5TH STRAIGHT DISTRICT TITLE OVER RIVAL CRUSADERS

St. Thomas Aquinas rolled past rival Canton Central Catholic Friday night at Salem high school, winning handily 64 to 46 to cap off dominant district title run and completing the historic run of 5 straight.
Always an intense matchup, Central brought their best energy early and found themselves just down three after the first quarter 12-9. That would be as good as things would get for Central.
The senior guard tandem of Mike Sommers and Drew Duplin combined for 43 points and continually stomped out any signs of life Central could muster.
Sommers hit all three of his long range attempts, including a huge dagger when Central had whittled it down to 10 points in the second half. Sommers led all scorers with 26 points and also added three steals. Duplin tallied a double- double hauling in 10 boards with his 17 points and Jaret Knox added 8 points and 10 boards of his own. As a team Aquinas owned the glass 32 to 12 for the game.
The toughness of their league, the NCL, has prepared the Knights for the tournament and it showed throughout. Canton Central, also playing a tough schedule benefited from being battle tested , ousting No.1 seed South Range in the semi-final. Range had won 22 games but that did not prepare them for the better teams in the district. The NCL has four teams in the final 16 including Aquinas.
The Knights, allowing just 44 points a game in four rounds of tournament play, head now to Canton to take on Northwestern at the Field House March 15th. Tip-off is 6:15. GO KNIGHTS!
